On Tuesday 18th and 25th November, we had the pleasure of welcoming various different primary schools from Birmingham to join in on our Junior Maths Challenge Workshops run by our fabulous Maths department. The workshops involved Measuring, Code Breaking, Relay Races, Pop Up Shapes, Binary Numbers and Knights Move, as well as a very exciting Treasure Hunt which was definitely a favourite.
Some of the teachers who accompanied their schools appreciated that the skill of perseverance was encouraged. Students really enjoyed the practical tasks as well whilst other teachers commented on the fact that the children were pushed to work things out rather than just being given an answer. An example of this was when they had to generate their own binary code using the alien rather than just being handed the binary code.
Here are some of the comments that they made:
“Very enjoyable and challenged the children to a level at which they were still engaged.”
“Children enjoyed all of the activities but especially the treasure hunt!”
“Codes were voted best by the pupils!”
“We enjoyed the code breaking activity/magic tricks, the morning more than fulfilled our expectations.”
Overall, it was a great success and we look forward to seeing schools at our other workshops running throughout the next year.
