KEHS Gifted and Talented Maths Challenge Programme
With increasing demands on primary school teachers, it can be difficult to find the time and resources to stretch gifted young students, but KEHS Teaching School is making the process easier.
Established in 2011, ‘KEHS Teaching School’ has been working with primary schools across the region to develop methods for stretching gifted and talented children in Key Stage 2. Since then, we have invited more than 500 children from over 20 schools to KEHS to participate in Maths Challenge Mornings.
Dr Beth Ashfield, Head of Mathematics, and her department have created a programme of activities that take children beyond the syllabus, teaching them new skills as well as developing their analytical thinking. Staff from World’s End Primary School commented that “our pupils find the sessions engaging and memorable. They get a real sense of enjoyment of the subject and value their time here”.
Further to her work with children at the sessions, Dr. Ashfield has also published a book of gifted and talented resources. The result of 12 months research and consultation with the local community, her book contains ideas and activities that teachers can use in their own classrooms.
